Back in May, yMusic played an set at Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2. The occasion was simple: the group was about to head into the recording studio, and wanted a chance to premier a set of new pieces from some of today’s most exciting composers. In addition to Nico Muhly’s “Balance Problems” and Andrew Norman’s “Music in Circles,” yMusic performed Timothy Andres’ “Safe Travels” and Marcos Balter’s “Bladed Stance.” The music was thrilling, the crowd was supportive, and everyone felt ready to get on a plane in the morning to start the process of a new record.
Little did we know that Daniel S. Johnson was in the audience, making notes in preparation for an article. Published quarterly, Chamber Music is the public face of Chamber Music America, a very important organization in contemporary music. The article, which you can read here by scrolling to page 42, focuses on the commissioning of new work, specifically Balter’s piece, and discusses the creative process from the vantage point of both composer and ensemble. We are proud to have been included in this, and thank Daniel for his intelligent and sensitive words, and Marcos for his exquisite composition.
We look forward to sharing his piece, and its other new companions, with you in person. Please click here for a full list of our upcoming shows!
