There was once a day in rehearsal in which our inimitable violist, Nadia, stopped rehearsal on a dime to say “you guys, I think I just won $25,000!” Some of us were skeptical, as the phrase conjured childhood memories of Publisher’s Clearing House as well as more current moments waiting in bodega checkout lines behind avid Lotto customers. Of course, we were foolish to doubt her, and we’d like to publicly congratulate her on her status as a 2013 Meadows Prize Winner! yMusic plays Carnegie Hall, joins Dirty Projectors!

It is our great pleasure to remind you of our upcoming performance at Carnegie Hall (on the big stage!). As part of the Wordless Music Series, we will play a 45 minute set on January 11, featuring the world premiere of Nico Muhly’s “Balance Problems,” generously commissioned by Linda and Stuart Nelson. After a short break, we will join Dirty Projectors for special segments of their set. We hope to see you and encourage you to snap up the few remaining tickets for this event here.

yMusic to tour Australia!

It’s every musician’s dream to escape the dreary NYC winter with a trip to the southern hemisphere, and yMusic has finally made it a reality. The group will arrive in Sydney, bleary-eyed after 24 hours of travel, the morning of January 21, and that very same day will join Dirty Projectors for a special concert at the Sydney Opera House. The next four days feature performances in Spiegeltents in both Sydney and Parramatta, as well as a special string trio performance at “Music in the Void” in the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Just before the holidays, yMusic joined forces with the lovely and talented songwriter/composer, Jherek Bischoff, for two sets at the Atrium in Lincoln Center. Jherek wrote some excellent new music for the group, and sounded brilliant on the ukulele and bass. The concerts also featured guest vocals from Jen Goma, of People Get Ready, and yMusic’s fastest yet rendition of “Beautiful Mechanical.” Click here for a slide show of pictures.

We live in the literal future. While our collaborators for our upcoming Ecstatic Music Festival show are as far-flung as Canada (Richie) and California (Ryan), we’ve been managing to get some work done via the miracle of the Internet (which I’ve just discovered after careful reading of this completely mind-blowingly-awesome NYTimes feature is capitalized [??!])! A few days ago, CJ and Rob sat down with Skype and Steve Taylor and filmed these awesome little pieces. I am really, really excited for this show, guys!!
